Adventure
- Watch the sunset at the Monjeau Lookout
- Hike Grindstone Lake Trails – Alfred Hale Connector
Adventuring in Ruidoso, New Mexico is a captivating experience that immerses you in the serene beauty of the Lincoln National Forest. Two highlights of any Ruidoso adventure are Monjeau Lookout and the Grindstone Lake Trails.
Monjeau Lookout: This historic fire, originally built in the 1940s lookout tower offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the road to the top. Once you reach the summit, endlessly rolling hills and majestic peaks are nothing short of awe-inspiring. You can see for miles, making it an ideal spot for photography and quiet contemplation. The sunsets from this place are ON POINT.
Grindstone Lake Trails: Grindstone Lake is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of trails that cater to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The trails wind through the scenic landscape around the lake, providing opportunities to explore diverse ecosystems, spot wildlife, and enjoy the tranquil waters. We chose a higher-elevation trail with lovely views and a patch of gorgeous red maple trees.
In both locations, you’ll be surrounded by the natural beauty that makes Ruidoso a hidden gem. From the sweeping views at Monjeau Lookout to the peaceful trails around Grindstone Lake – Ruidoso is a place for beauty and adventure.

Lodging
- Sizmark Chalet Inn
Beneath the tall pines on the main street of Ruidoso, New Mexico, the Sitzmark Chalet Inn offers a cozy and charming retreat for travelers. Guests can enjoy a homemade muffins, cookies, and locally roasted coffee each morning. The rooms are simply furnished in a southwest style and equipped with modern amenities.
One of the unique features of the Sitzmark Chalet Inn is the whiskey barrel steam sauna, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. But, what stood out to me, was the kindness of the owner and how she made you feel at home.
