The countdown to Fall (in my mind) has officially begun. August “slips away like a moment in time” (thanks Taylor Swift) and thrusts us into a September of cooler weather and festivities. New Mexico in the autumn is breathtaking. It is truly an especially captivating time to explore the Land of Enchantment. As the crisp autumn air settles into the high desert, the state transforms into a vibrant canvas of golden foliage, festive celebrations, and time-honored traditions, as well as comforting flavors that capture the essence of this magical season. This three-day itinerary will outline some of the highlights of a New Mexico Fall in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. (With more Fall itineraries to come!)

Day One: EARLY Morning
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta: A Sky Full of Wonder
Every October, the skies above Albuquerque come alive with a kaleidoscope of colors during the world-famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This iconic event is a must-see. Hundreds of hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes drift gracefully against the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains. Balloons lift off in unison during the early morning Mass Ascension. This is nothing short of breathtaking. I have only ever gone in the morning because I was hooked my first time seeing the Mass Ascension. It is the #1 photographed event in the world for a reason. Start your morning at a crisp 4:00 AM to ensure you get parking, a green chile burrito, and pinon coffee as you await the magic.
TIP: Make sure when planning your fall trip you allow flexibility as the Balloon Fiesta often gets rained or winded out so you may have to try again!
Day One Early Lunch: Chow Down after the Balloon Fiesta
After a morning of marveling at the colorful spectacle of the Balloon Fiesta, heading to Sawmill Market in Albuquerque is the perfect way to continue your New Mexico fall itinerary. This bustling food hall offers a variety of culinary delights. It captures the diverse flavors of New Mexico and beyond. Whether you’re craving authentic tacos, fresh oysters, or a hearty breakfast burrito, Sawmill Market has something for every appetite. I particularly enjoy the pasta from Tulipani Pasta, the delicious iced tea latte from Hawt Pizza Co, any of the waffles from XO Waffle, and a Taiyaki (ice cream in a fish-shaped cone) from Neko Neko!
Another option for food is to eat at the VERY busy but INSANELY GOOD restaurant “The Range.” My favorite location is the one in Bernalillo. I order the Huevos Rancheros con Carne and a Pickle Bloody Mary. Go ahead, you deserve it.
Day Two Morning: Santa Fe Ski Basin: A Tapestry of Autumn Colors
As you venture north, the Santa Fe Ski Basin offers a serene escape into nature’s autumnal brilliance. The drive up the mountain is a journey through a tapestry of golden aspens. A hike through the basin during this time is a sensory delight. You will enjoy crisp air carrying the earthy scent of fallen leaves and the vibrant colors creating a stunning contrast against the deep blue sky. It is an incredible way to escape the city, breathe mountain air, and take a million photographs with friends.
Make sure you add this gorgeous hike during peak leaf season to your New Mexico Fall itinerary.
TIP: I recommend heading up early to avoid the line of cars BUT stick around until the view below is in full sun. You can either take a short walk down the easy trail just to the overlook OR enjoy a longer hike. Plus, beating the crowds is a must on the Aspen Vista Trail!
Day Two Afternoon- Ojo Santa Fe: A Soothing Retreat
After your full day of exploring yesterday, there’s no better way to unwind than by soaking in the healing waters of Ojo Santa Fe. This luxurious spa offers a peaceful retreat. Soak in mineral-rich pools surrounded by the natural beauty of New Mexico. The warm waters soothe your body as you relax while the stunning fall landscape around you calms your mind. Some of the pools are located just beneath the stunning yellow Cottonwoods. Ojo Santa Fe provides the perfect balance of relaxation and rejuvenation during the fall season. Then, take a break from soaking and enjoy a delicious meal from Blue Heron. After, explore the grounds- meet the adoptable puppies, see the chickens, enjoy a coffee from their cafe, and enjoy a walk on their many trails.
A Taste of New Mexico: Comforting Flavors of Fall
No fall experience in New Mexico would be complete without indulging in the state’s rich culinary traditions. As the temperatures drop, locals and visitors alike turn to hearty dishes that warm the soul. Posole, a traditional stew made with hominy, pork, and red or green chile, is a staple of New Mexican cuisine. It is such a comforting dish to enjoy on a crisp fall evening. Green chile stew, with its spicy kick and robust flavors, is another favorite. Paired with fresh tortillas, these dishes offer a taste of the region’s rich cultural heritage and a comforting embrace during the cooler months. For breakfast, I often get a delicious plate of Huevos Rancheros or Chiliqulies and a Chocolate Pinon Coffe from The Chocolate Maven in Santa Fe.
The Last Day of Your Three-Day New Mexico Fall Itinerary: High Tea at St. James Tearoom
Attending High Tea at St. James Tearoom in Albuquerque during the fall is an experience that feels like stepping back in time to an era of elegance and refinement. With its Victorian-inspired décor and attention to detail, St. James Tearoom provides a delightful three-course tea service. This is complete with finely brewed teas, delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones, and decadent pastries. Each visit is an immersive experience. The ambiance is a part of the ritual as the tea itself. In the fall, the tearoom’s cozy, warm interior and seasonal touches make it the perfect place to relax, indulge, and celebrate the season’s beauty with friends and loved ones. We experienced the “Around the World in 80 Days” theme which was a perfect tie-in to the Balloon Fiesta and ended our three-day New Mexico fall itinerary on a high note.
Bonus Day Trip: 4th of July Hike in the Manzano Mountains: A Hidden Gem
The Manzano Mountains, just a short drive from Albuquerque, offer a less crowded but equally (if not more!) breathtaking fall experience. HOWEVER, peak leaf time is not always lined up with leaf change in Santa Fe or the Balloon Fiesta. SO this may not work for your consecutive Fall itinerary. Keep an eye out on Instagram to see when the leaves are at their peak. In 2023, this was around October 15th.
The 4th of July Trail, is a hidden gem. The trail winds through a dense forest of glowing red maples and golden aspens. The intense colors had me gasping at every turn. For a girl who grew up in the Sonoran Desert, the first time seeing maples was jaw-dropping. As you hike, the sound of crunching leaves underfoot and the sight of vibrant foliage create a tranquil atmosphere, making this a perfect spot to appreciate nature’s beauty.
Conclusion: The Magic of Fall in New Mexico
Fall in New Mexico is a time of transformation. The landscape, the skies, and even the food are invigorating and comforting. Whether you’re marveling at the balloons in Albuquerque, hiking through golden forests in the mountains, enjoying high tea with your best friend, or soaking in the tranquility of Ojo Santa Fe, each experience is a testament to the unique charm of this season. As you savor the flavors of posole and green chile stew, you’ll find that the warmth of New Mexico’s culture is just as comforting as the fall colors that blanket the land.
