Changed My Life One Side Gig at a Time
Having two side gigs while holding down a full-time job with the state might seem crazy. BUT let me tell you, I am thrilled that my life now enables me to passionately pursue my interests and unleash my creativity WHILE GETTING PAID. Here is why I changed my life one sidegig at a time- the how you will see soon.
My “Why”
A year ago, I underwent a drastic and beautiful transformation in my life. I despised my job and the people around me constantly tore me down. Furthermore, they didn’t appreciate my skills and knowledge. Instead, they used my passion against me. They labeled me as emotional, too young, overly communicative, and unable to solve problems (that were out of my control). Supervisors told me to apologize to people who mistreated me. They did not protect, advocate for, mentor, or support me. However, I know I excel at leadership, team building, encouragement, organization, planning, creativity, education, and optimism – but they dismissed it all, destroying my confidence. My flame dimmed. I was completely isolated and misunderstood.
I never experienced such constant shame, guilt, and embarrassment for minor mistakes. They called me “emotional” and told me to “tone it down.” (Any women out there triggered by those sexist microaggressions?) Despite them gaslighting me to believe it was due to my youth and inexperience, the departure of the entire cohort of women hired with me revealed a different truth. Anger became my only passion. Sleep was my sole escape. I provide this background not to harp on the past but to offer context. I’m reclaiming my identity, creativity, and enthusiasm. I am not just making fun videos for the heck of it. This is part of my process to regain the energy, motivation, confidence, and community to do so comfortably. This transformation is monumental.
Cha Cha Cha Changes
In short, I departed from that job after securing another MUCH BETTER job (more on that later)! I left those people behind (byeeeeeeee!) and completely changed my life. I always advocate changing your circumstances when possible, but do it wisely. If I had quit abruptly, I would have ended up without a job or a place to live. And that would have only harmed me and my little family. Plus, I firmly believe that the best revenge is success.
After the proper preparations were in place, I relocated to beautiful Santa Fe, where I have a supportive community that cheers me on, motivates me, and backs me up. This change has made a significant difference in my life.
It took some time to rediscover myself – to reignite my enthusiasm for everything I do, everything I love, and everyone I include in my life. I write this blog to embrace exploration, adventure, travel, local Santa Fe and New Mexico cuisine, culture, and COFFEE all with signature Carly enthusiasm. This platform will delve deeper into the content shared on Instagram (@carlybodlygoes) or showcase the stories behind the photos posted on @ce_sw_photography. After all, sometimes the true magic lies in the stories behind the photo.
I am an archaeologist with the New Mexico State Land Office, a content creator for Simply Social Media here in Santa Fe; and occasionally, a quizmaster for Geeks Who Drink – and I’m thrilled you’re here. Please join me for travel tips and itineraries, hikes and birdwatching, photography and videos, and whatever else I decide to share – all connected by one thing: enthusiasm! AND if you happen to want to collaborate, please check out my Creative Portfolio (still under construction!).
[Fun Fact: I was actual voted the most enthusiastic in the high school drama program – because, of course, I was a drama kid.]
